The holidays are finally here! And while cheer and good spirit are at their peak for the year, looming on the horizon is a season rich with breads, unhealthy fats, and sugars. Gluten and other food sensitivities hit so many of us hardest during this time, leaving us feeling guilty for indulging and looking for relief from the bloating, pain, gas, and other digestive discomforts.

Gluten itself can do more than just make us feel gassy; it harms the delicate tissue keeping harmful toxins out of your bloodstream, resulting in an increasingly common condition known as leaky gut. Your gut lining is what allows nutrients from your food to pass through to your bloodstream, but it also keeps out “foreign invaders”. If that lining is compromised and microscopic pieces of food, not to mention toxins, pass through, the immune system goes into overdrive to try and protect your body from the onslaught. The result is inflammation, which affects the entire body, and can ultimately cause a cascade of health issues.

And on top of the damage that gluten can cause, we learn more every day about the harmful toxins that can be found in our food supply; toxins that are wreaking havoc on our bodies. These toxins – like glyphosate sprayed on GMO crops – are found in both organic and traditionally-grown foods. Glyphosate and other herbicides and pesticides decimate the diversity of your microbiome (the hundreds of thousands of species of bacteria, fungi, yeast, and even viruses in our gut that help keep us healthy from within). Glyphosate has even been found by the World Health Organization to likely be a human carcinogen.

These days, sensitivity to gluten and awareness around herbicide damage is so commonplace that it’s actually not very hard to find gluten-free, organic recipes for classic comfort foods or your favorite desserts, which is good news given that many of the store-bought alternatives lack flavor and texture. But what about going to that office holiday party, or your relative’s house for a get-together? You can’t rely on gluten-free options being available, and it feels terrible to say no to the food your host took the time to prepare and serve! Not to mention, it might take a seriously formidable will to say no to your favorite holiday treats. So where does that leave our traditional dishes? Do you have to sacrifice your favorites just to feel comfortable?

While we always encourage you to eat organic and drop the gluten (especially if you have an allergy), the short answer is no. You shouldn’t need to give up every bit of gluten during the holidays. For those with light sensitivities, as opposed to allergies, moderation is key and RESTORE can help alleviate the digestive distress associated with gluten sensitivity.

RESTORE keeps the cells of the gut lining communicating with each other, so they can hold tightly together. This allows for better regulation of what passes through from the gut to the rest of the body. It also helps the bacteria in the gut communicate with each other and with the cells of the gut lining, which creates a healthy and diverse environment for the microbiome to thrive. A healthy microbiome keeps your gut functioning properly, and fuels a healthy brain. RESTORE delivers peace of mind during this season of indulgence!
