• Gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea, gas, bloating, or irritable bowel syndrome occur when foreign particles pass through the intestinal barrier, unchecked. This elicits an inflammatory response, which is ultimately responsible for most of the symptoms of leaky gut. But this response does not stop at digestive discomfort…
  • Mood disorders such as ADD, and autoimmune diseases, such as Crohn’s, can stem from inflammation that goes left untreated.
  • Brain fog or migraines also occur as a result of inflammation. The blood-brain barrier’s permeability is affected by intestinal permeability (another phrase for “leaky gut”).
  • Allergies (food or asthma) are caused by a compromised immune system (which also provokes inflammation).
  • Joint pain is also, well you probably guessed it, a result of As long as your body is fighting against you, pain and discomfort will be a result.

Here’s the thing: your gut barrier is formed through tight junctions, which are the “gatekeepers” of the gut, helping to shield the bloodstream from unwanted toxins. We absolutely need this barrier to function properly. When these tight junctions loosen, toxins and foreign materials can seep into the blood stream leading to gastrointestinal issues and inflammation (remember that pesky response that triggers countless symptoms, conditions, and diseases).

Glyphosate (e.g. Roundup herbicide), the most widely used herbicide in the world, is found in everything from genetically modified foods such as high fructose corn syrup, soy bean oil, and canola oil, to non-organic produce, wheat, and conventional meats that are typically “finished” with GMO corn (e.g. fast food burgers). This ubiquitous herbicide stimulates the release of a protein called zonulin that degrades the tight junction integrity (gluten can also cause leaky gut syndrome by this same mechanism).

Since tight junctions also protect the blood-brain barrier, when glyphosate or gluten enters the bloodstream, the blood-brain barrier integrity can be degraded as well, causing a number of neurological issues such as brain fog and migraine headaches.

The results of leaky gut can have a huge impact on your health and well-being. Your quality of life is potentially being compromised by something that you can resolve with a few easy adjustments. If you think you may have leaky gut syndrome, please consult your primary care physician.
